Timing Belt Replacement / Vehicle Hoses | Modesto, CA
CAR BELTS AND HOSES
Every manufactured vehicle is equipped with belts and hoses which are essential parts vital to the normal functioning of the engine. They affect the engine's cooling, charging and air conditioning systems. Making sure that the belts and hoses are checked often, will ensure your vehicle continues to function as it should, and this is a service that we at Auto and Fleet Mechanic have been rendering expertly in Modesto, CA for over twenty years.
Among all the various parts in an automobile, the belts and hoses have the shortest life span. Hence, regular inspection is needed. These components often wear out and tear, crack, fray and leak very fast due to frequent exposure to heat, vibrations, and contaminations. That is why it is imperative to constantly check these components so as not to spell disaster for your vehicle.
HOSE AND BELTS FUNCTION
These components supply power to areas in the engine such as alternator, water pump for engine cooling, power steering pump, air conditioning compressor, and radiator cooling fan.
The hoses are usually made out of special material so they can withstand the liquids and vapor they carry such as gasoline and alcohol and are reinforced to hold pressure. The various belts in the engine and their roles are:
- Radiator hose: delivers coolant to the engine
- Power steering hose: connects power steering pump to steering equipment
- Fuel hose: sends gasoline from gas pump to engine
- Heater hose: provides coolant to the heater core.
There are different types of belts and pulleys, and they play different roles, none of which should be neglected:
- Timing belts: sometimes referred to as a Glimmers belt, it is located on the outside of the engine. It allows the crankshaft to turn the camshaft which opens and closes the valves on synchronized movement with the engine's pistons. Breakage of this belt causes the engine to quit working immediately.
- Serpentine belts: also referred to as drive belts and they have a flat design which reduces heat buildup in the belt. They provide power to the air injection pump, power steering pump, cooling fan, and air conditioning compressor. It is advised that inspection should be carried out whenever oil is changed.
PRECAUTIONARY MEASURES
It is natural for belts and hoses to deteriorate with time and mileage. Meanwhile, certain events can accelerate the wear process, and they should be avoided as much as possible.
- Avoid the occurrence of overheating in your engine. This poses the biggest danger to your vehicle as it could lead to a blown head gasket or warped and cracked cylinder heads or broken camshaft.
- Loose belts should be adjusted and retained back to normal with the use of a tension gauge. Realignment should also be carried out when required so as to prevent twisting and reversal of the belts.
- Use of lubricants like oil and grease should be avoided. They attack the rubber which allows for the build-up of dirt and grit attachments. This acts as an abrasive and cause wear and tear.
- Avoid prying hoses with sharp tools, like a screwdriver, as they can damage the pipe's connection and create a potential leak part.
- Slippage also causes havoc to the belt's working condition. It creates heat and hardens the belt making it prone to premature cracking and outright failure.
The belt and hose give out warning signs when they are in need of replacement and maintenance. Look out for cracking, grazing, shortening, peeling on the belts. Listen up also for screeching sounds from your engine especially during startup on cold mornings or at sharp turns. Sometimes, the belts and hoses look good on the outside but are deteriorated on the inside. Generally, hoses with over 100,000 miles are meant to be replaced while belts of 50,000 miles should be replaced whether they look like it or not.
