These days with the rising cost of new vehicles, many drivers are wanting to keep their current vehicle for as long as possible while also avoiding expensive repairs. Do you know how often car maintenance is needed? The service manual that came with your vehicle (you may find it at the back of the glovebox) has a complete list of the manufacturer’s guidelines for vehicle maintenance. This list will include such things as the interval for oil changes, brake repair, transmission flush, and replacing belts, plus more that you should be aware of!

But in addition to the typical vehicle maintenance items listed in the manual, your vehicle can always use a little extra attention. Take a look at the list of easy maintenance items below. If you follow these tips, you not only ensure that you are driving as safely as possible, but you will know if something doesn’t look or sound right. You will then know it is time to get your car into your auto shop for a thorough inspection.

  • Each day...
Take a quick walk around your car before driving off, checking for damage to the bodywork, low or flat tires, cracks in the windows, or leaking fluids.
  • At least once a week...
    • Check the air pressure in each tire, tread depth, and general condition of all four tires, including the spare.
    • Check the level of fluids—oil, coolant/antifreeze, brakes, windshield washer, power steering, and top off as needed.
    • Make sure all lights are working properly—replace burned-out or broken bulbs and make sure the lenses are clean.
    • Inspect your windshield wiper blades and consider replacing them if more than six months old, especially if you live in a rainy climate.
    • Inspect the bodywork for any serious damage that may cause a driving hazard, such as dented fenders or wheel wells.
    • Check mirrors and windows for cracks or chips and replace them as needed.
    • Wash your car, inside and out, and give it a good wax job periodically to help protect the finish and repel water and dirt.

Remember: Just a few minutes each day can help prevent a serious problem from developing, or even an accident due to lack of maintenance!
