It seems that many drivers don’t think too much about the condition of their brakes until they start to experience stopping problems. By then, their brakes have probably become so worn that they are faced with costly brake repair. They may be left wondering what does brake service include and when should they have scheduled it for their car? Unfortunately, there are no hard and fast rules on when brake service should be performed.

As a conscientious vehicle owner, you want to know that you are receiving the best brake service possible performed by qualified brake repair specialists. Here are some questions that may be helpful to ask when you schedule a brake service:

  1. What does quality brake service include? It will include flushing out the old brake fluid and replacing it with new fluid, replacing brake pads, resurfacing rotors, and cleaning, adjusting, and lubricating other braking mechanisms.
  2. How much does brake service cost and how long will it take? Replacing just brake pads is a minimal expense, but if there are other problems, such as replacing the calipers, the cost goes up. Does the shop offer same-day service, or will you have to arrange for other transportation?
  3. What is the quality of the brake parts used? Find out what kind of parts are used by the shop and make sure that they are high-quality parts.
  4. How thorough is the brake service performed? If your entire braking system needs to be inspected, which would include boots, seals, pistons, and bushings in addition to the rotors and pads, it would need to be complexly disassembled. This will not only be more time-consuming and costly, but it also increases the number of things that could go wrong in reassembly.
  5. Does the shop offer any warranties? Ask questions about the warranty before the work is done. Does it cover only parts, or does it include labor? How many miles or time period is it good for? Is there a follow-up on the work done?
  6. Is the shop trustworthy? Don’t be afraid to ask your mechanic to explain the type of work to be done and then show you the old parts that may have been replaced.
