It is an unfortunate fact that many vehicle owners tend to forget about the condition of things that are hidden under the hood of their vehicle, such as the battery, oil, radiator, and of course, the transmission. That is, until they start to experience problems, such as a low oil light, or shifting or overheating problems. So be proactive in taking care of your vehicle! You can maintain the power and performance of your vehicle by keeping up with basic maintenance services, such as oil changes and transmission services.

Your vehicle could start to exhibit any of the problems listed below if regular transmission service is neglected:

  1. Delayed Shifting.  Lack of pressure in the transmission fluid prevents the gears from engaging properly.
  2. Difficulty Shifting.  Sludge or grime built up in the transmission fluid can cause the gears to change erratically (too fast, too slow, or too jerky), along with grinding sounds or unusually high RPMs.
  3. Slipping gears.  When the friction material on the clutches and transmission bands is worn out, the gears may keep slipping out of place.
  4. Overheating.  If there is a loss of power along with a burning smell or smokiness, the transmission is overheating and internal damage could be taking place.

What does transmission service consist of? It typically includes the following:

  • The transmission unit, which includes the pan and case, gasket, and sealing surfaces, is inspected and cleaned.
  • The pan gasket will be replaced if it is worn or cracked, allowing transmission fluid to leak out.
  • The transmission filter will be replaced if it is dirty and clogged, preventing the flow of transmission fluid.
  • A transmission fluid change or a flush may be necessary if there is a significant buildup of sludge, if you notice a burnt smell, or if the fluid is dark in color.

Remember:  Regular transmission service is recommended anywhere between 50,000 miles up to 100,00 miles. The wisest thing to do is to read your vehicle’s service manual to know what the vehicle’s manufacturer recommends for your specific vehicle. Your certified transmission repair technician can also provide sound advice about transmission service.
