Cooler weather is on the way and you may find yourself wondering, “Why can a diesel engine be hard to start?” During summer, it was probably easy for your diesel engine to start right up. However, it can become increasingly difficult to start diesel engines as the temperatures cool down.

So why can a diesel engine be hard to start? There are several factors that can contribute to hard starts for your diesel engine, such as:

  • Idling for long periods of time,
  • Short stop-and-go trips, such as in the city
  • Poor maintenance,
  • Weak battery, and
  • Mileage adds up on your vehicle.

Because the conditions above do not allow for efficient diesel combustion, sludge deposits can form in the engine block and lines. There are some other problems that are more complex, but with the appropriate diesel repairs and service, some of these problems can be avoided:

  • Worn injectors,
  • A lot of carbon accumulated around glow plugs or spark plugs,
  • Old fuel not combusting correctly,
  • Oil sludge in the engine and other components, and
  • Increased cranking resistance,

Tip to Remember: If you notice a lot of smoke coming from the exhaust when you start your diesel engine, either black or white, it is a sign that you should head to your diesel repair shop as soon as you can. There could be a pending problem that can develop into an even bigger problem without the proper diesel repairs.
