If your vehicle is starting to lose power at the most inconvenient times, such as overtaking a slower vehicle, going up a steep hill, or trying to merge into traffic, you may want to ask your mechanic about cleaning the fuel system. Did you know that the type of fuel in your tank makes a difference in how your vehicle performs? And you’ve even been using the right grade of fuel for your vehicle. So what type of vehicle maintenance should be done to resolve this problem?

There are several basic services that can be done, such as changing the oil, including the fuel filter. Or, it may be time to have the fuel injectors flushed and cleaned. These injectors pressurize the fuel, pumping it through an electronically controlled opening into the fuel cylinder and allowing the fuel to burn efficiently. Check your owner’s manual as typically it is recommended that fuel injectors should be cleaned after every 60,000 to 90,000 miles.

As you drive your car, it burns fuel, leaving deposits of carbon behind, which then builds-up in the fuel injectors over time. Flushing and cleaning the fuel system removes these carbon deposits so that your engine will run smoother and be more fuel efficient.

Why is vehicle maintenance important, including a cleaning of the fuel system? Any of the following issues could mean that it’s time for a fuel system flush:

  • Significant decrease in fuel economy.
  • Your car has lost performance and feels sluggish when you accelerate.
  • The engine idles roughly and sometimes dies completely.
  • There are unusual sounds when you try to start your car.
  • Your vehicle is getting harder to start.

Following the vehicle maintenance schedule pays big dividends:

  • Improves miles per gallon of gas, saving money on fuel costs
  • Reduces emissions from your car so that you can pass the emissions test easily.
  • Restores and/or maintains your vehicle’s power and performance.
  • Protects the components of the engine, extending its life.
