YOUR HYBRID BATTERY REBUILDS

Premium High Capacity Cells. Nickel Plated Bus Bars. New Stainless Steel Fasteners. Upgraded Computer. Computerized balancing, and matching of Cell Modules. Real World load testing of the battery pack.

Deep Cycle Conditioning

Deep charge & discharge cycles with final balance. This option is best for battery packs that have started showing signs of poor performance, it’s recommended to tune up your hybrid battery when it is around 100k mile.

The cost of replacing or refurbishing a failed hybrid battery pack will make you want to consider a repair for your hybrid battery instead. Finding the right shop to provide you with a hybrid battery repair is almost impossible. Therefore, you need to understand the basics of how hybrid batteries work. The hybrid battery used to power the electric drive portion of hybrid vehicles such as the Toyota Prius, and Honda Insight is also commonly known as an IMA battery or a hybrid battery “pack.” Calling it a battery is something of a misnomer because it is made up of many individual battery cells, typically Lithium-Ion (Li-Ion) that are connected in modules that together supply the voltage needed to power the car. Depending on the make and model, hybrid battery packs can contain anywhere from 120 to over 240 individual cells.

The issue is that without running a seemingly complicated diagnostics on the pack, it’s quite impossible to know the number of bad cells, identifying the bad cells, and most importantly the ones that are still functional but in a deteriorating state. In many cases, close to the time your maintenance indicator comes on, about 80% of the cells in the battery are wrong and in quick need of replacement. This makes it arduous to build a business out of repairing hybrid batteries as it is not cost effective to maintain the necessary stock of good cells and modules that are used for replacing bad ones.

The second issue is inconsistency. For example, your battery has a failed cell or just a few failed cells. It may be quite easy to replace those failed modules and get your vehicle back to the road as soon as possible. However, before long, another weak module may rear its ugly head, and cause the battery to fail again. Apparently, this gets expensive as time goes on; coupled with the fact that it is time-consuming, and requires intense labor to replace the bad cells. When it comes to the battery, it is difficult to “predict the future” and testing requires the cells to be tested one at a time. All of this can lead up to expensive repair cost versus hybrid battery replacement costs. These reasons led to the term “hybrid battery repair” being tagged as somewhat misleading as it is not really viable or even possible in the usual way repairs are generally perceived. So what’s the solution?

The average Honda hybrid battery newly minted from the factory lasts around seven years. So if your failed battery is eight years old or older, it is most likely worn out, and it’s best to have it simply replaced. Also, if you have driven less than 6,000 miles in a year or your battery isn’t more than seven years old, we can say you qualify for what we call Hybrid Battery Reconditioning. This is different from repair as it involves several diagnostics, and methods such as cycling, balancing, discharging, grid, and charging which are designed to separate bad modules or cells for replacement, and can help “charm” the battery back to its previous functional state. Also, you should note that the minimum life expectancy for a hybrid battery is around four years, especially in locations with hot climates, so there are no guarantees. The advantage of reconditioning is that you get to know the actual state of your battery’s health, and sometimes the cost may be applied to the charge of a replacement battery if necessary.
